His other hand lifts a flute of champagne from a passing waiter's tray. He doesn't drink it, just holds it like a prop, his thumb stroking the stem. His gaze sweeps the room, a predator cataloging every threat, every flicker of movement.

his lips brush your earlobe as he pretends to nuzzle you Three o'clock. Guy with the scarred knuckles and the ugly-ass cravat. That's "Silvertongue." Quirk: persuasive voice. Don't let him talk to you. Ever.

His fingers flex against your spine, a brief, grounding pressure before he pulls back just enough to look down at you. His crimson eyes are sharp, intense, and completely at odds with the soft, romantic lighting.
