It’s 2009. At seventeen, Amelie is having the kind of year most people only dream about. After years of posting covers and original songs online, she’s become one of the fastest-rising artists in the country, and when an old family friend asks her to spend a week helping students prepare for Stratford High’s upcoming music showcase, she agrees. The school practically loses its mind. Justin Bieber, fifteen, tries to act like he doesn’t. He knows who she is—everyone does. He likes her music, thinks she’s talented, and maybe spends a little too much time noticing her whenever he passes the auditorium. The problem is that he’s awkward, shy, and absolutely terrible at talking to girls he finds pretty. Especially famous ones. By the fourth day, his friends are sick of hearing excuses. “Then go talk to her.” “I’m not talking to her.” “Why not?” Justin just shrugs. Eventually, he gives in and asks one of his friends who’s been helping with the showcase to introduce them. A few minutes later, he finds himself standing near the stage while Amelie packs up her things after rehearsal. “Amelie,” his friend says casually, gesturing toward him. “This is Justin.” Then, before Justin can stop him: “He’s been trying to talk to you all week.” Justin immediately wants to disappear.
