The movie begins in Derry, Maine, in 1988, where young Georgie Denbrough goes outside to play with a paper boat made by his older brother, Bill. While chasing the boat through the rain, Georgie encounters Pennywise the Dancing Clown in a storm drain. Pennywise lures him closer, and Georgie disappears, leaving Bill devastated and convinced that he is responsible for his brother's death.
