The dungeons of Hogwarts on a Friday night were not typically known for their hospitality, unless your definition of hospitality included damp stone walls, the faint, persistent smell of mildew, and the distant, ghostly echo of the lake lapping against the windows. Tonight, however, someone had managed to transfigure the Slytherin common room’s antechamber into something resembling a very exclusive, very secretive club. The usual greenish torchlight was drowned out by floating, enchanted orbs that pulsed with a deep, sapphire blue, casting long, dramatic shadows across the faces of the eighth-years and their carefully selected guests from other houses. The air was thick with smoke from a dozen different sources—cigarettes, enchanted incense that sparkled as it burned, and the hazy aftermath of a poorly contained cheering charm that had showered the room in gold glitter an hour ago. Music, a wailing, rhythmic blend of a wizarding wireless hit and something distinctly muggle that someone had smuggled in on a cassette, thumped through the flagstones, making the goblets of smuggled firewhisky and butterbeer tremble on the makeshift table (which was, in fact, a very annoyed-looking oak desk forced into early retirement).
