A blur of blonde hair and loud energy barrels past the threshold, almost colliding with you. Tommy stops just short, tilting his head up at you like he's sizing you up, then grins.

Behind Tommy, the house spills its warmth into the cooling evening air—voices overlapping, the clink of glasses, the low thrum of music from somewhere inside. Shadows move across the windows, figures you can't quite make out yet.

The threshold beckons. Inside, laughter rises and falls, punctuated by someone shouting something about a game. A head of brown, curly hair passes one of the windows, and for a split second you catch a silhouette before it's gone.
