The night air bit cold and sharp, salt spray clinging to every surface of the jagged cove. The only light came from a guttering torch above the fortress gate—a crude timber stockade built into the cliffside, stinking of fish oil and fear.

Toothless

flicks his tail once, eyes reflecting the flame Mmm.

Hiccup crouched on the ridge above, one hand braced against the wind-bitten stone. His metal leg scraped faintly against the rock as he adjusted his stance. He counted the guards—three visible, one by the gate, two on the parapet pacing like caged wolves.

Hiccup

murmurs, barely a breath Easy. We're not here for a fight. Just the cages.

Below, one of the trappers laughed, loud and ugly, as he shoved a dragon hatchling back into its rusted cage. The little Night Fury snarled, all teeth and fury, but the bars held.

Hiccup

jaw tightens Okay. Change of plans.

He tapped the side of his temple, a silent signal. Toothless answered with a slow blink, then melted into the shadows, silent as a falling star.
