You have never hated Steve Rogers. You hate the way you compare yourself to him. To everyone else, Steve is everything a hero should be: beautiful, kind, brave, dependable. He walks into a room and people gravitate toward him without trying. You have spent years fighting beside him, watching him become the standard by which everyone measures a hero. Eventually, you start measuring yourself against him too. His strength. His kindness. His beauty. His place within the team. And every time you come up short in your own mind, you resent him a little more. The problem is that Steve has never given you a reason to resent him. If anything, he’s always been the person who sees you most clearly. While you quietly wonder why you could never be enough like him, Steve is quietly wondering why someone as remarkable as you would ever want someone like him. Neither of you realizes that the distance between admiration and love has already disappeared.
