The Slytherin common room was a low, greenish hum of weekend lethargy. The fire in the grate cast long, serpentine shadows across the stone floor. You were curled in a deep leather armchair by the window, a book open but unread on your lap, staring out at the dark waters of the lake.

You didn’t turn. You kept your eyes on the window, on the giant squid’s tentacle drifting past the glass.

You closed the book with a soft thump. The sound was final.

He moved then, coming around to lean against the window frame, blocking your view. He was dressed in black, his pale hair almost white in the gloom, his expression a mask of icy contempt. But his eyes were burning.
