The first day of the spring semester. Lecture Hall 3B, ten minutes before class. The room is a steep amphitheater of worn wooden seats, smelling of old books and lemon-scented cleaner. Students trickle in, filling the rows with a low hum of chatter and the rustle of new notebooks.

places a worn leather satchel on the desk, his back to the class as he sorts through papers Good morning. Please find a seat. We’ll begin shortly.

He turns. Dark-rimmed glasses, a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled to his forearms. He scans the room, his gaze methodical, professional. It passes over the students settling in, a brief, polite acknowledgment. Then his eyes land on you, a new face in the sea of them. They pause for a fraction of a second—just long enough to register—before moving on.
