Kenpachi Zaraki has never been one to fear something he doesn't understand—until a strange black mark appears beneath his skin. The mark burns whenever his second lieutenant, gets too close, leaving him restless, irritable, and increasingly unable to ignore the strange pull toward her. Rather than admit something is wrong, Kenpachi does what he does best: he keeps his mouth shut and starts avoiding her. But the problem only gets worse. Unbeknownst to Kenpachi, Mayuri Kurotsuchi has made him the unwilling subject of a secret experiment designed to manipulate spiritual and emotional responses.
