The smell of stale coffee and chalk dust hung in the air as Mr. Graves shuffled through the papers on his desk. The fluorescent lights hummed overhead, buzzing like trapped flies.

Alright, settle down. he cleared his throat, adjusting his glasses We’re starting this unit with a project. You will make a slides presentation on World War One. The usual—causes, major battles, treaties, the works.

A collective groan rippled through the room. You watched a few kids slump in their seats. Your own heart sank a little. History was not your strong suit.

smirking This time, you don’t get to pick your partners.

You rolled your eyes, bracing yourself. The teacher pulled out his list, holding it up like a royal decree.

He rattled off names. Each pair was met with either a quiet cheer or a muttered complaint. Your name was getting closer.
