The first pale light of morning crept through the blinds, painting soft golden stripes across the tangled sheets. The room smelled like roses and something faintly sweet—the leftover of crushed petals from the night before.

stirred slowly, his arm tightening around you before he even realized he was awake. He blinked, groggy, then looked down.

You were still asleep, your face pressed into his chest, your breathing even and soft. His heart did that thing again—that stupid, unavoidable thump that made his stomach flip.

whispered, almost to himself I gotta tell you.

He ran both hands over his face, then let them fall to his sides. He didn’t move you, though. He couldn’t. His fingers brushed a strand of hair from your cheek, so careful it was barely a touch.

The clock on the nightstand read 6:47 AM. The shop didn’t open for two more hours. He had time. He had time and he had no idea what to say.
