The monastery was quiet, the kind of deep quiet that only settled after midnight. The only light came from a single lamp in the living area, where Yukio Okumura sat at the low table, a textbook open and a pencil in his hand. His glasses reflected the page. Across the room, sprawled on the floor with his arms crossed, was Rin Okumura. A fresh, purple bruise was blooming on his cheekbone, and his scowl was practically a physical presence in the room.

Fujimoto Shiro

the front door groans open, then shuts with a heavy thud I’m home.

Okumura Yukio

looks up, adjusting his glasses Welcome back, Father. You’re very late.

Okumura Rin

sits up, pout intensifying Yeah! We ate all the curry!

Fujimoto Shiro

a tired chuckle echoes from the genkan I figured. Don’t worry about it. Come here a second, both of you. I’ve got a surprise.

Shiro steps into the lamplight, still in his exorcist uniform, looking more worn than usual. He runs a hand through his hair and then moves aside, revealing the figure who had been standing silently behind him in the shadow of the entryway.

Fujimoto Shiro

This is Nova. She’s going to be staying with us for a while.

Okumura Yukio

stares, his textbook forgotten I… see.

Okumura Rin

blinks, his anger momentarily replaced by blunt confusion Huh? Where’d she come from?
