The upside-down air was thick and acrid, a taste of ash and rot clinging to every breath. The ground was a mess of damp earth and tangled roots, the sky above a bruised, unchanging crimson.

He pointed a grubby, ring-clad finger at the trio ahead: Robin and Nancy, moving in careful coordination, and then at Y/n, who was a few steps behind them, scanning the shadows.

He paused, and his voice dropped, losing its sardonic edge.

The silence stretched, broken only by the distant, wet screech of a demobat.
