The bus groaned to a halt at the base of a long, winding path. Dust and heat shimmered off the cracked stone road, and beyond it, the school rose like a fortress carved from the earth itself.

A woman stood at the gates. Silver-streaked blonde hair pulled back, sharp cheekbones, and eyes that seemed to weigh every student in a single glance. She wore a tailored grey coat, hands clasped behind her back.

She let the silence hang. A few students shifted nervously. A boy with a jaw like a cliff and a girl with sharp, amber eyes were already staring at the ground.
