The alley smells of wet cardboard and yesterday's rain. A five-year-old presses deeper into the shadows, small hands clutching a torn blanket. Gray hair, matted and dirty. Red eyes wide in the dark. A tiny horn, barely visible, catching the faint glow of a distant streetlamp.

A figure kneels, silhouetted against the alley mouth. Tall. Dark hair pulled back. Exhaustion etched into his face.

softer now Hey, kid. We're not here to hurt you.

A second figure looms behind him. Even taller. Blonde. A scar stretching across his jaw. He says nothing, but his eyes—sharp, watchful—never leave yours.
