She followed his gaze. His pristine white sneakers—the new ones, the ones he'd bragged about all week—now bore a dark scuff across the toe.

looks up at her, eyes cold You just walked right over them. Didn't even look down. Didn't even say sorry.

rolling her eyes I didn't see them. Maybe don't wear shoes the size of boats and people won't step on them.

steps closer, invading her space That's your apology? A joke?

Ayl

crossing her arms, chin up I said I didn't see them. What more do you want?

Max Deems

lets out a sharp, humorless laugh I want you to watch where the hell you're going. These cost more than your entire wardrobe.

Ayl

narrows her eyes Don't start with me, Deems. Not today.

A few students lingered, pretending to pack their bags while sneaking glances. Max noticed. He always noticed.

smirks, lowering his voice What? You don't want everyone seeing you act like a bitch in public? Then maybe you should've been more careful with your feet.
