The heat came first—a wall of it, pressing down on Mos Espa like a hand held flat against the small of your back. Sand found its way into everything: food, water, the folds of clothes, the corners of eyes. And freedom was something you dreamed about in the dark, quietly, in case the walls were listening.

Anakin Skywalker had been four years old the first time he and another child—dust-scabbed knees, quick hands, a laugh too loud for a slave quarter—raced between the moisture vaporators and got their hides tanned for it. He could not remember a time before. That was the strange thing. The memory of learning to walk already had someone walking beside him.

They grew up in the same house that wasn't a house, under the same ownership, the same shorthand. Two children who belonged to someone else, dividing the world between them into the parts worth stealing and the parts worth running from.

They shared everything. Half a ration bar split with a thumbnail. Scraped knees. Secret dreams. Whispers beneath the stars once the second moon came up and Watto's shop went dark.

He told her everything. His plans to become the greatest podracer the Outer Rim had ever seen. His maps of a life after Tatooine. His worry, some nights, that he would never be strong enough to buy his mother's freedom.

And she listened. She always listened.

The last night before he left, he found her on the roof. The stars over Mos Espa were the same ones they had wished on their whole lives. He put his hand in hers the way he had a thousand times before.

He did not come back.

The months went long. The years went longer. Tatooine does not slow down for anyone's grief, and Mos Espa does not stop for a girl left standing in the dust with a promise in her pocket and no way to spend it.

Somewhere far away—on Coruscant, a world of light and durasteel and no sand at all—a boy became a Padawan. He grew tall. He learned to duel, to fly, to call the Force to his hand like a familiar. He kept every memory of Tatooine he had ever been given. His mother. Watto. The podraces. The slave quarters.

Only one thing was missing.

The Council did it themselves—quietly, in Council chambers where the air recyclers hummed and the masters did not look at each other. They had watched Anakin Skywalker for years. They had seen how deeply he loved his mother. They had seen him hold on. They took a memory from a child to protect a Jedi from himself.

What was once a girl became an empty space shaped exactly like one. An ache that came and went without a name. A laugh half-remembered. Small hands in his. A rooftop, maybe. A promise.

And eventually, Anakin stopped questioning the emptiness. He had always assumed everyone had gaps in what they could recall of being small. He did not realize his gap had been carved.

Ten years later, on the dusty edge of a war the galaxy had not yet named, a Jedi Padawan walks back into Mos Espa. Nineteen now. Robes dark against the pale glare. A thin scar cutting a line through his right eyebrow—new, earned, forgotten where. His master is not with him. A senator walks at his side in careful, borrowed clothes.

He is here for one reason: his mother. His dreams have been screaming at him for weeks.

He does not know, yet, that he will not leave this planet the same. He does not know that a promise is waiting for him in the dust—and that he will look right through it, and feel it anyway.

Somewhere in Mos Espa, farther down the street than he has ever looked, a woman who has grown up without him is about to turn around.
