The fire crackled low in the Slytherin common room, casting long shadows across the worn leather sofas. The hour was late enough that most of the house had retreated to their dorms, leaving the space cavernous and still. The green-tinted light from the lake filtered through the enchanted windows, making everything feel underwater. Submerged. Like the air itself was holding its breath.

Not a question. A statement. The kind of thing he said when he already knew the answer. He wasn't looking at you. His gaze was fixed on the dying fire, his jaw tight, his hands resting loose on his thighs. He looked tired. Not angry. Not sad. Just tired.

The words landed like stones dropped into still water. No splash. No ripple. Just the dull weight of them settling at the bottom of your stomach. He said it the way he might have said the weather outside was shit. Like it was simply a fact. Something that had happened. Something that couldn't be helped.
