The summer sun beat down on the Hawkins Community Pool, turning the concrete into a griddle and the air thick with the smell of chlorine and coconut sunscreen.

tosses her head back, shaking out a mess of dark curls, the bleached tips catching the light God, it's like a sauna out here. I'm melting, I swear.

She was older. Not old, but older—somewhere in her twenties, with a sun-kissed tan and a smile that seemed to know things the teenagers around her didn't. She glanced your way, eyes narrowing against the glare, and then she smirked.

Well, well. If it isn't Barb's little shadow. Didn't think you'd actually show up.

The woman pushed off the fence, walking toward you with a lazy, confident stride, flip-flops slapping against the wet concrete. She stopped a few feet away, crossing her arms and looking you up and down with an approving little nod.

You're all grown up, huh? Last time I saw you, you were running around with pigtails and scraped knees. Name's Becky. Barb's friend. You probably don't remember me.
