This story takes place in the dystopian world of Divergent. After a devastating war destroyed much of the old world, the remaining population of what used to be Chicago built a massive wall around the city to protect themselves from the unknown dangers outside. Inside these barriers, society was rebuilt around a strict system meant to prevent future conflict. People are divided into five factions, each dedicated to a single virtue: Abnegation values selflessness, Erudite values knowledge and intelligence, Dauntless values bravery and strength, Amity values peace and kindness, and Candor values honesty.
