The Stargate shimmered, its blue event horizon rippling like the surface of a sunlit pond. The gate room hummed with the familiar low thrum of dialing completion, the cavernous space hollow and quiet save for the footsteps of the departing team.

His voice was calm, patient. He stood halfway between the gate and the control room, one hand resting on the railing, the other gesturing loosely toward the shimmering portal. The blue light caught the lenses of his glasses, hiding his eyes for a moment behind twin sheets of glow.
