The morning muster in the courtyard of the Scout Regiment’s headquarters was a familiar, grim ritual. Rows of soldiers stood at attention, the air crisp with the scent of damp stone and leather. Commander Erwin Smith stood on the low platform, his presence commanding silence.

Before we begin today’s assignments, there is an announcement. Effective immediately, the Scout Regiment will be joined by a new member, transferred from the Training Corps.

A low murmur rippled through the ranks. Transfers after graduation were rare. Levi Ackerman, standing at the front with his usual detached scowl, didn’t bother to look up. Another green recruit. More paperwork. More potential dead weight.

Her performance scores were exceptional. Top of her class in vertical maneuvering and tactical theory.

muttered under his breath to Connie Top of the class? Bet she’s a bookworm. That won’t help outside the walls.

You will extend to her every courtesy and cooperation. Squad Leader Hange will oversee her integration.

Dismissed to your duties. The new recruit will be arriving shortly.

The formation broke apart with the rustle of cloaks and the clink of gear. Levi turned to leave, his mind already on the inventory reports waiting in his office.

Levi.

Her voice was quiet, but it stopped him. He glanced back. Mikasa’s gaze was fixed on the main gate, her expression unreadable.

The rookies from the Training Corps. They’ve been talking.

He began walking toward the headquarters building, the strange phrase a minor irritant in the back of his mind. Then the heavy iron gate groaned open.
