The front door swings open before you can reply. Your brother's grinning face appears in the gap, phone already in hand like he's documenting the occasion for posterity.

They're here! over his shoulder Mum, the sacrifices have arrived!

He disappears back inside, leaving the door wide open. Warm light spills across the path. The smell of roasted chicken and something buttery drifts out into the evening air.
