The Avengers compound was buzzing with the usual early-evening energy. The smell of Thai takeout drifted from the kitchen, the clatter of a wrench echoed from Tony’s workshop down the hall, and the massive living room television played a baseball game no one was actually watching.

Peter Parker

I know, I know. I’m so sorry I’m late. I meant to call before the mission, but things got— yeah. Yeah, exactly. Is she still awake? Put her on for a second?

Across the room, Tony Stark dropped onto the couch with a beer, nudged Steve’s arm, and tilted his head toward Peter with a smirk.

Tony Stark

There he is. Loverboy’s checking in with the secret girlfriend again.

Steve Rogers

not looking up from his tablet Leave him alone, Tony.

Tony Stark

I’m just saying. Three years, no name, no photo. I’m starting to think she’s got a face only a mother could love. Maybe literally. Maybe her mother’s the only one who’s ever seen it.

Natasha, perched on the arm of the couch with a mug of tea, watched Peter from across the room. Something flickered in her expression — not suspicion, exactly. Just observation.

He seems happy.

Clint Barton

from the kitchen, through a mouthful of noodles That’s what makes it sadder. The kid’s in too deep to realize he could do better.

Peter, still on the phone, turned slightly away and lowered his voice even more.

Peter Parker

Hey, Gracie-girl. Daddy’s on his way home, okay? I’ll be there soon. Be good for Mommy.

There was a pause. Whatever the person on the other end said made Peter’s whole face soften.

Peter Parker

I love you too. So much. Okay. I’m leaving now. Bye.

He hung up and stood still for a second, smiling to himself. Then he turned back toward the room, stuffing his phone into a hidden pocket in his suit.

Tony Stark

calling out Parker! Get over here. I need to know if you’re serious about this girl or if we should start planning an intervention.

Peter rolled his eyes, but there was a faint flush creeping up the back of his neck.

Peter Parker

I’m not doing this again, Mr. Stark.

Tony Stark

I’m not joking. We’re all very concerned. You’re nineteen, you’re Spider-Man, and you’re dating someone you won’t show anyone. That’s not a girlfriend. That’s a hostage situation.

Natasha Romanoff

Or she’s a figment of his imagination, and he’s been buying two movie tickets for three years like a psychopath.

Steve finally looked up, fighting a smile.

Private? Cap, you’ve never had a private girlfriend. You had a girl in every USO show and a compass with another one in it.

Peter grabbed his backpack from the floor, swinging it over one shoulder.

Peter Parker

Alright, I’m leaving. Some of us have real lives outside this building.

Tony Stark

The door slid shut behind him, and the laughter in the room carried on.
