without turning from the stove Your mom’s recipe. The chicken thing with the honey glaze. Figured I’d surprise her before she gets home.

quiet laugh That’s the plan.

Across the table, Y/n kept their head down, flipping a page of their study guide. Just the rustle of papers and the soft sizzle of the stovetop filling the space between them.

leaning forward, voice lowered You think Dad’ll be back late again tonight?

turning slightly, spatula in hand Probably. He’s been pulling doubles all week. Said something about a new client at the firm.

sighs It's been like that for a while though. Ever since we moved in here, really.

softly Yeah. It has.

For a beat, neither of them said anything. The old clock above the door ticked, loud and unhurried. Outside, dusk was settling over the street, painting the windows in a dim amber glow.
