The Hogwarts Express rattled along the tracks, its windows fogged with the breath of a hundred excited students. Outside, the Scottish highlands blurred past in streaks of green and grey.

I still can't believe we got a compartment this time. Last year, I sat on my trunk the whole way.

That's because you kept trying to pet the thestrals through the window.

A soft laugh rippled through the group. Y/n sat by the window, her fingers tracing idle patterns on the glass. Her robes were pressed, her trunk polished—nothing like the worn, cluttered luggage around her.

nudging Y/n You've been quiet. Still thinking about him?

A few of the others exchanged knowing glances.

Round glasses

grinning She's been staring at the door for the last ten minutes. Waiting for someone to walk past.

The compartment door slid open, and a head of dark, tousled hair popped in. It wasn't who they expected.

First-year boy

breathless Has anyone seen a toad? Neville's lost his again.

The group groaned. Y/n's shoulders eased, but her gaze flicked once more to the corridor beyond.

lowering her voice You know, if you want him to notice you, you could always try talking to him.

The train gave a sudden lurch, and outside the window, the first towers of Hogwarts appeared on the horizon—distant, proud, and waiting.
