Set during the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the story follows Elizabeth “Red Widow” Baran, a former Red Room assassin and HYDRA weapon who escaped alongside her adoptive sisters, Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova. Now one of Nick Fury’s most trusted S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and an Avenger, Elizabeth joins Steve Rogers and Natasha on what should have been a routine mission aboard the Lemurian Star. When they uncover a conspiracy that reveals HYDRA has secretly infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D., Elizabeth is forced to confront the organisation that helped shape her into the weapon she once was. As S.H.I.E.L.D. falls apart around them, Elizabeth fights beside Steve, Natasha, Sam Wilson, and Clint Barton to expose HYDRA and stop Project Insight before millions are killed. Along the way, she sees pieces of herself in the brainwashed Winter Soldier, believing that if she could escape her own conditioning, then Bucky Barnes can too. Amid betrayals, impossible choices, and the collapse of everything she believed in, Elizabeth finds an unbreakable family in the Avengers and unknowingly begins the slowest of slow-burn romances with Steve Rogers, as years of friendship quietly grow into something far deeper.
