The classroom smelled like stale coffee and Expo markers. Somebody in the back was snoring — actually snoring — and the teacher didn't even bother to look up from her laptop.

She was already planning her outfit. You could tell by the way she was scrolling through Instagram, liking every dress that came up.

The hallway was chaos — a river of backpacks and voices and the smell of vape smoke drifting from the bathroom.

Through the window, you could see the city skyline. The tower glinted in the afternoon sun, all glass and metal, cutting into the blue like a knife.
