On a rainy Wednesday morning in November 1966, Paul McCartney stormed out of a tense Beatles recording session, climbed into his Austin-Healey, and sped into the London mist. Distracted, he missed a traffic light and crashed violently into a truck, dying instantly. Panic-stricken and fearing their massive fame would vanish, the remaining Beatles—under pressure from the British government—decided on a massive cover-up: they secretly hired an identical lookalike named William Campbell (or "Billy Shears") to take Paul's place.Guilt eventually consumed the band, so they began burying cryptic clues about the tragedy across their albums for their most dedicated fans to find.
