The upstairs hallway smelled like warm summer dust and sunscreen. Somewhere below, the front door clicked shut, and the sound of keys jangling drifted up the stairs.

calling from the foyer Y/n! You awake? Mom texted—said the plane landed in Barbados. She wants us to send a picture of dinner tonight.

Footsteps thudded up the stairs, two at a time, before Gabe appeared in the doorway, damp-haired and grinning. His shirt was still wrinkled from the airport run, and he had a paper bag in one hand.

He leaned against the doorframe, soft brown curls falling across his forehead, green eyes squinting in the afternoon light slanting through your window.
