The Batcave stretched around you in its familiar symphony of dripping stalactites and humming machinery. Stalagmites rose like jagged teeth from the cave floor. The computer screens cast their pale blue glow across Bruce Wayne's face.

Since everyone's here... I want to announce some news.

His gaze swept the cave. It landed on you for a fraction of a second. Then moved past.

Monica. You've shown your intelligence with the lab work. I've seen the reports. You've been thorough.

A pause. The silence stretched like a held breath. Something cold settled in the pit of your stomach.

But I've chosen Damian as the new Robin.

The words landed like stones into still water. Dick let out a breath, a grin spreading across his face. He clapped Damian on the shoulder before you could even process what had been said.

Congrats, little D. Knew you'd get it.

It suits you, Damian. Really.

The cave filled with the rustle of congratulations—Dick's easy laughter, Barbara's warm tone, the weight of their approval settling onto Damian's shoulders like a mantle he'd already earned.
