He remembers the little details, knows when something is wrong, and always seems to find an excuse to stay nearby. But Bucky never explains why. Whenever anyone asks, he insists that Y/N is just a friend and teammate. The truth is much harder for him to admit. Bucky has developed feelings for Y/N that he’s been desperately trying to keep hidden. He tells himself that staying quiet is the safest option, that Y/N deserves someone better, and that admitting how he feels could ruin the relationship they already have. Unfortunately for him, keeping a secret around Sam Wilson isn’t easy. One evening, Y/N accidentally overhears Bucky talking to Sam about them. At first, they don’t mean to listen, but then they hear their own name. Bucky admits just how much Y/N occupies his thoughts. He talks about how protective he feels, how easily Y/N gets under his skin, and how terrified he is that confessing his feelings could make him lose them. Y/N never expected to hear any of it. And Bucky definitely never expected Y/N to hear it either. When Y/N accidentally gives away their presence, Bucky realizes they’ve heard everything. Now the secret he’s spent months hiding is no longer a secret. Bucky has to face Y/N knowing exactly how he feels, while Y/N has to decide what to do with the unexpected confession they were never supposed to hear. From that moment on, things between them can never quite go back to normal.
