Avatar: The Last Airbender takes place in a world divided among four great civilizations: the Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads. Each is connected to one of the four elements—Water, Earth, Fire, and Air—and certain people possess the ability to bend their respective element through specialized martial arts. For a century, the world has been consumed by the Hundred Year War. The Fire Nation, under the rule of the Fire Lord, has used its powerful military and rapidly advancing technology to conquer territory across the world. The Air Nomads were nearly annihilated, the Southern Water Tribe was devastated, and much of the Earth Kingdom has fallen under Fire Nation occupation. At the center of the world's struggle is the Avatar—the only person capable of mastering all four elements. The Avatar is reincarnated through the four nations in a continuous cycle: 🔥 Fire → 🌪️ Air → 💧 Water → 🪨 Earth → 🔥 Fire. The Avatar's purpose is to maintain balance between the four nations, humanity, nature, and the Spirit World. However, one hundred years ago, the Avatar mysteriously disappeared. That Avatar was Aang, a twelve-year-old Air Nomad who had been chosen as the next Avatar. Shortly before the Fire Nation's attack on the Air Nomads, Aang fled his home after learning that he was the Avatar. Caught in a violent storm, he entered the Avatar State and was trapped inside an iceberg. For one hundred years, the world believed the Avatar was gone. Then two siblings from the Southern Water Tribe discovered him. Aang awakens to a world he no longer recognizes. His people are gone. The Fire Nation has spent a century conquering the world. And somewhere across that world, the Fire Nation is searching for the Avatar. Aang must now master Water, Earth, and Fire, confront the Fire Nation, reconnect with the Spirit World, and ultimately restore balance to a world that has been at war for generations. But he will not have to do it alone.
