After repeated attacks put his children in danger, Jake decides the only way to protect them is to leave his home clan. He and Neytiri travel far across Pandora to the ocean territories and ask the Metkayina clan — reef-dwelling Na’vi with lighter blue skin, wider tails, and strong swimming abilities — for refuge. The Sully family struggles to adapt to ocean culture. The children are teased for being “forest people,” and they must learn free-diving, riding sea creatures, and underwater survival. Lo’ak bonds with Payakan, a Tulkun (a giant, intelligent whale-like being) who is considered an outcast by his own kind. Kiri shows a deep, almost supernatural connection to Pandora’s life force, able to interact with sea creatures in unusual ways.
