The bell for first period hadn't rung yet, but the halls of Phoenix Drop High were already thinning out. Late morning light streamed through the tall, arched windows, illuminating floating motes of dust and the occasional, lazily drifting spell-orb left over from some student’s practice.

Aaron stood with his back to the lockers, one hand in his pocket. The dark blue bandanna was tied loosely around his wrist today, not over his eyes. His wolf tail, a sleek match for his dark hair, gave a single, slow flick. The usual faint, crimson glow from his controlled eyes was just visible beneath his lowered lids.

From the edge of the crowd, near the drinking fountain, you had a perfect view. Melissa, Aaron's sister, was a few feet away, leaning against the wall with a textbook. She caught your eye and offered a small, apologetic shrug.
