The hallways of Hyosan High are almost empty. The lunch bell rang eight minutes ago, and the stragglers have already disappeared into the warm, greasy haze of the cafeteria. The fluorescent lights hum a low, constant note that you've stopped noticing months ago.

His voice is a low murmur, almost a private joke between the two of you. In the distance, someone laughs. A door slams somewhere on the second floor. The normal sounds of a normal school day.

Another scream. Then another. The sounds come from the direction of the science wing. A crash follows, something metallic hitting the floor and clattering. A third scream begins but stops abruptly, as if someone's hand clamped over a mouth.
