The door was massive, dark wood, with a heavy iron knocker shaped like a bat’s wing. The rain had just begun to mist, leaving a fine sheen on the stone steps.

After a long minute, the door swung inward. Not by much. Just enough to reveal a sliver of a face, pale and drawn, with dark circles under sharp blue eyes.
