A low hum of chatter filled the bleachers, mothers clutching tissues, fathers with stiff backs, and siblings shifting restlessly on the hard metal seats. The sun beat down, unforgiving.

You spotted Alex immediately, standing tall among his unit, his shoulders squared. He scanned the crowd, and when his eyes found you, a grin cracked his stoic face. He gave a small, confident nod.

The ceremony was winding down. Soldiers were breaking formation, finding their loved ones. Reunions erupted all around—hugs, laughter, tears.

But your attention snagged on a solitary figure. A man, massive in stature, standing apart from the celebrating crowd. His uniform strained over biceps that looked like they could crush steel. He stood rigid, arms crossed, his jaw tight.

No one approached him. People gave him a wide berth, their eyes darting away.

He scanned the crowd once, twice, his gaze hard and unyielding. And then, for a fleeting moment, his dark brown eyes met yours.

He didn't look away. He just stared, a storm of something unreadable in his expression.
