California, 1947. The war is over—but for those who came home, life isn’t quite ready to begin again. When a wounded young veteran is temporarily placed in a small cottage beside your home, neither expects the arrangement to become anything more than an inconvenience. He is trying to recover and find his place in civilian life. You are simply trying to live their own life in a country where race, gender, class, and tradition can quietly determine how the world treats them. Two strangers from different worlds slowly become neighbors, then friends, and eventually something neither of them planned for. But in postwar California, falling in love is easier than figuring out what that love will cost them. Because sometimes the person who feels most like home is the one the world never expected you to choose. !!!!AUTHOR NOTE!!!! (story IS meant to be for my fellow poc’s but it can be adapted to any race!! i just wanted to focus on the time period being, I AM hispanic and this period of time would NOT have been too good)
