The highway stretched ahead, a dark ribbon of asphalt cutting through the late-evening gloom. The radio hummed a low static between songs, and the heater blew warm air against your face.

He stepped out, and for a moment, you forgot how to breathe.

He was tall—easily over six feet—with broad shoulders that strained against the dark fabric of his uniform. His hair was an impossible shade of salmon pink, cropped short but with the roots grown out brown, like he hadn't bothered to dye it in weeks. A tongue piercing glinted when he clicked his jaw, and a silver barbell sat snug against his left eyebrow, matching the stud in his ear.

License and registration.

You fumbled for the glovebox, your fingers suddenly useless. The plastic latch slipped twice before you managed to pop it open. Papers scattered everywhere—your insurance, an old McDonald's receipt, a crumpled gas station coffee cup.

He watched, patient, one eyebrow raised.
