Static crackles —units responding. Reports of gunfire, surface-level. Third floor, drug house converted.
Jason Todd
muttering under his breath as he swings through the fire escape Fucking junkies. Couldn't even keep it quiet.
The window gave way with barely a sound, a whisper of shattered glass drifting into the humid Gotham night. The building smelled like stale cigarette smoke, damp carpet, and cheap cologne. Jason landed soft, boots touching down in the dark like a cat. The type of cat that could snap your neck without blinking.
He moved through the hallway, gun drawn but low. Voices from the next room, three, maybe four men. Laughter, drunk. A bottle clinking.
Dealer 1
slurring Nah, man, I'm tellin' you—the whole shipment's gone. Someone musta tipped 'em off.
Dealer 2
scoffs Tipped who? Cops? You paranoid as shit tonight.
Dealer 1
You seen the news? Batman's been crawlin' through Crime Alley like a goddamn roach. You think he don't know about this place?
Jason rolled his eyes behind the helmet. The compound speakers wrapped his voice in a low, mechanical growl as he stepped through the door.
Jason Todd
News flash, assholes. He's not the one you should be worried about.
The room exploded into chaos. Someone screamed. A table flipped. A bottle shattered against the wall. Jason moved through them like water through rocks, fists and boots finding jawbones and ribs with practiced ease. One guy went down with a crunch, clutching his nose. Another caught a crowbar to the shoulder and dropped like a sack of cement.
In less than a minute, the room was quiet.
Dealer 3
wheezing from the floor Fuck you, Red Hood. Fuck you and your—
Jason Todd
kicking the gun out of reach Yeah, yeah. You'll get a chance to tell the judge that.
He zip-tied them efficiently, one after another, checking pulses and pockets without ceremony. Then he heard it.
A scratch.
Small. Soft. Coming from beneath a broken table in the corner.
Jason Todd
pausing ...The hell?
He crouched, peeling back the splintered wood. Two wide eyes stared back at him from the darkness. A dog. Small, scruffy, covered in dust and blood—not its own, probably from the earlier scuffle before he arrived. It trembled, pressed as far into the corner as it could get, letting out a low, fearful whine.
Jason felt something twist in his chest. The part of him that still remembered being a scared kid in a dark place.
Jason Todd
voice quieter, softer Hey. Hey, it's okay. I'm not gonna hurt you.
The dog didn't move. Just stared at him with terrified eyes, breath fast and shallow.
Jason Todd
slowly reaching out a hand, palm open C'mon, buddy. Let's get you outta here.
