The party noise bled through the floorboards of Ominis’s upstairs study, a dull, rhythmic throb that felt more like a headache than music. Up here, the air was thick with the sweet, cloying scent of weed and the sharp tang of cheap whiskey.

Sebastian didn’t answer. He took a long, slow drag from the joint pinched between his fingers, the ember glowing fiercely in the dim room. He held the smoke in his lungs until they burned, then let it out in a thin, steady stream that did nothing to cloud the emptiness in his chest.
