The silence in the minka was the loudest thing you had ever heard. It was the deep, waiting quiet of a traditional house at night, the kind that seemed to swallow sound whole. The only light came from the paper lanterns outside, casting soft, shifting patterns of shadow and gold through the shoji screens.

He was still in his formal montsuki haori and hakama, the white of his hair almost glowing in the dim light. He had taken off his blindfold. His shoulders were relaxed, his hands in his pockets, as he looked out into the dark garden.
